In 1923, Alexandra David-Néel,1 French-Belgian, Buddhist scholar, and former opera singer, disguised herself as a pilgrim and traveled through Tibet, a country closed to foreigners. Her destination was the ancient city of Lhasa. Her traveling companion was a young Tibetan lama named Yongden. My Journey to Lhasa is her account of her travels.
