About the Author
I'm an author of novels, essays, and feature articles.
My first novel, Falling to Earth, published by Firebrand Books in 1998, was a Lambda Literary Award finalist. My second novel, The Woman Who Loved War, was published by Firebrand Books in May of 2005.
I've written essays and articles for Shambhala Sun (now Lion's Roar), Sierra magazine, Our State, The Independent, and Wildlife in North Carolina. Some of my feature articles have covered turtle hatchings, surveys of bat populations, and birding expeditions on the North Carolina Outer Banks.
My essay, “Care Taking,” published in Shambhala Sun, was included in The Best Buddhist Writing 2010. My short story, "Sanctuary," received first honorable mention for the 2012 Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize.
I'm a meditation teacher who has been practicing with the Shambhala community since 2004. I write about the experience of Buddhism in contemporary life.
I volunteer with Restorative Justice Durham, an organization that seeks to repair community harm caused by criminal behavior.
